இதையடுத்து, டிராபிக் ராமசாமியை ராயப்பேட்டை அரசு மருத்துவமனையில் இருந்து உடனடியாக அண்ணாசாலையில் உள்ள பன்னோக்கு சிறப்பு மருத்துவமனைக்கு மாற்றி, உரிய சிகிச்சை அளிக்க வேண்டும் என்று சென்னை உயர் நீதிமன்றம் நேற்று உத்தரவிட்டது.

இதன் தொடர்ச்சியாக, நேற்று காலை 9 மணி அளவில் டிராபிக் ராமசாமி பன்னோக்கு உயர் சிறப்பு மருத்துவமனைக்கு மாற்றப்பட்டார். அவருக்கு டாக்டர்கள் தீவிர சிகிச்சை அளித்து வருகின்றனர். தற்போது அவரது உடல்நிலை நன்றாக இருக்கிறது என்று டாக்டர்கள் தெரிவித்தனர்.

அதிமுக பொதுச்செயலாளர் ஜெயலலிதா மீதான சொத்துக்குவிப்பு வழக்கில் மேல்முறையீட்டு மனு மீதான அனைத்து தரப்பு வாதங்களும் நிறைவடைந்தன.

Former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa's appeal against Special Court's conviction order in disproportionate assets case was filed in the Karnataka High Court around 11 a.m on Monday.

Her advocates filed the appeal, with a plea seeking suspension of sentence, in the High Court's registry section.

Jayalalithaa’s aide Sasikala, her relatives V.N Sudhakaran and Ilavarasi also approached the High Court, seeking bail.

Senior Supreme Court advocate Ram Jethmalani will represent Jayalalithaa with the defence team. Earlier on Sunday, the legal team discussed options to get the sentence suspended and the conviction stayed, party sources said.

Legal experts say a stay on the conviction is deemed necessary to get her disqualification suspended. While the Supreme Court has said in many cases that the appellate court has the power to suspend both the sentence and conviction, it laid down in 2001 that when a public servant has been convicted for corruption, the conviction should not be stayed during the pendency of an appeal.

Since the High Court was on vacation, the application may be taken up by a vacation bench on Tuesday.

ஸ்ரீரங்கம் சட்டமன்ற தொகுதி இடைத்தேர்தலில் போட்டியிடும் அ.தி.மு.க. வேட்பாளராக வளர்மதியை ஆதரித்து அ.தி.மு.க கொள்கை பரப்பு துணை செயலாளர் நாஞ்சில் சம்பத் நேற்று மாலை ஸ்ரீரங்கம் ராஜகோபுரம் அருகில் திறந்த ஜீப்பில் நின்றபடி பேசிக் கொண்டிருந்தார். அவர் பேசி முடிந்ததும் அந்த வழியாக சுயேச்சை வேட்பாளர் டிராபிக் ராமசாமி காரில் வந்தார். அவரது இயக்கத்தின் கொள்கைகளுடன் கூடிய பதாகைகள், சின்னம், கொடி கட்டிய ஒரு ஜீப்பும் உடன் வந்தது.

அ.தி.மு.க.வினர் பிரசாரம் செய்த இடம் அருகில் வந்த போது டிராபிக் ராமசாமியின் கார் திடீரென பழுதாகி நின்றுவிட்டது. இதனால் அவர் காரை விட்டு இறங்கி டிரைவரின் உதவியுடன் பேனட்டை திறந்து பார்த்து கொண்டு நின்றார். அப்போது அங்கு வந்த அ.தி.மு.க. தொண்டர்கள் சிலர், போக்குவரத்துக்கு இடையூறாக நிறுத்தப்பட்ட ஜீப் மற்றும் காரை அப்புறப்படுத்து என கோஷம் போட்டதோடு, டிராபிக் ராமசாமி முன்னால் நின்று கொண்டு, "ஜெயலலிதா வாழ்க... ! இரட்டை இலைக்கே எங்கள் ஓட்டு...!"  என்றும் கோஷம் போட்டனர்.

இதற்கு எதிர்ப்பு தெரிவித்த டிராபிக் ராமசாமி, அப்போது பாதுகாப்பு பணியில் இருந்த காவலர்களிடம் "தேர்தல் ஆணைய விதிமுறைகளை மீறி அ.தி.மு.க.வினர் 100க்கும் மேற்பட்ட கார்களில் பவனி வந்து இருக்கிறார்கள். இதனை நான் வீடியோ எடுத்து ஆதாரமாக வைத்து இருக்கிறேன். இதுகுறித்து புகார் செய்கிறேன் நடவடிக்கை எடுங்கள்" என்றார்.

இதனால் அ.தி.மு.க.வினருக்கும், டிராபிக் ராமசாமி மற்றும் அவர்களுடன் வந்தவர்களுக்கும் இடையே மோதல் ஏற்பட்டது. அ.தி.மு.க தொண்டர்கள் டிராபிக் ராமசாமியின் ஜீப்பை அந்த இடத்தை விட்டு உடனே அப்புறப்படுத்த வேண்டும் என கோஷம் போட்டனர். ஒருவருக்கொருவர் நேருக்கு நேர் நின்று வார்த்தைகளால் மோதிக்கொண்டதால் பெரும் பரப்பு ஏற்பட்டது. அவர்களிடையே கைகலப்பு ஏற்படாமல் தடுக்க இரு தரப்பினரையும் காவலர்கள் அங்கிருந்து அப்புறப்படுத்தினர்.

ஆனாலும் பிரச்னை உடனடியாக முடிவுக்கு வரவில்லை. இந்த பரபரப்புக்கு இடையிலேயும் டிராபிக் ராமசாமி வாக்குறுதிகள் அடங்கிய நோட்டீசுகளை வினியோகம் செய்தபடி அங்கேயே நின்று கொண்டிருந்தார். அப்போது, டிராபிக் ராமசாமியின் காரை காவலர்கள் தள்ளிக்கொண்டு சென்றனர். டிராபிக் ராமசாமியும் காரில் ஏறி சென்றுவிட்டார்.

தேசத்தின் மீது மட்டுமல்ல தனது தந்தை வரதராஜன் தாய் கீதா மற்றும் நண்பர்கள் மீதும் மிகுந்த பாசமும் மரியாதையும் கொண்டவர்.தாயிடம் பேசாமல் ஒரு நாளும் இருக்கமாட்டார்.

தீவிரவாதிகள் ஒரு இடத்தில் முக்கியமான திட்டத்தோடு முகாமிட்டு இருப்பதை அறிந்த மேஜர் முகுந்த் வரதராஜன் அவர்களை அவர்களது கோட்டைக்குள்ளேயே போய் கூண்டோடு அழித்து விட திட்டமிட்டு முன்னேறியவர் ஏப்ரல் 25ம்தேதி நெருங்கியும்விட்டார்.


அவர் நெருங்கிவிட்டதை அறிந்த தீவிரவாதிகள் கண்மூடித்தனமாக துப்பாக்கி பிரயோகம் செய்தனர் அவர்கள் நடத்திய குண்டு மழைக்கு பயப்படாமல் முன்னேறிய முகுந்த் வரதராஜன் ஒரு கட்டத்தில் ஒரு கட்டிடத்தினுள் பதுங்கியிருந்த மூன்று தீவிரவாதிகளையும் சுற்றி வளைத்துவிட்டார்.


நேருக்கு நேரான துப்பாக்கி சண்டையில் மூன்று பேரையும் சுட்டுக்கொன்ற முகுந்த் வரதராஜனுக்கு இந்த வெற்றி செய்தியை உரத்த குரலெடுத்து தேசத்திற்கு சொல்லவேண்டும் என்று நினைத்த போதுதான் குரலுக்கு பதிலாக மயக்கம் வந்ததை உணர்ந்தார், கண்கள் இருட்டிக் கொண்டு வந்தது அப்போதுதான் கவனித்திருக்கிறார் எதிரிகளின் குண்டுகள் தன்னை துளைத்திருப்பதை...மெல்லிய புன்னகையோடு ஜெய்ஹிந்த் சொல்லியபடி சரிந்தவர் அடுத்த நிமிடம் இறந்தவராகிவிட்டார்.


கண்ணிவெடியில் சிக்கிய போதும், முதுகில் தோட்டா துளைத்த போதும் உயிர்தப்பியவர் இவர். இதை எல்லாம் தனது குடும்பத்தினரிடம் சொல்லி எனது உயிர் கெட்டி அவ்வளவு சீக்கிரம் சாகமாட்டேன் அப்படியே இறந்தாலும் யாருமே அழக்கூடாது ஏன் என்றால் எங்களைப் போன்ற ராணுவ வீரனின் மரணம் நாட்டுக்கான கடமையாகும் என்றெல்லாம் குடும்பத்தில் சொல்லி வைத்திருந்தார் .


முகுந்த வரதராஜனின் மரணம் சாதாரணமானது இல்லை அது ஒரு வீரமரணம் என்பதையும் அவரது சாகசமும் வீரமும் ஈடுஇணையில்லாதது எனவும் அவரது அதிகாரிகள் சொல்ல சொல்ல தமிழகமே அவரது நினைவை போற்றியது மின் மயானத்தில் பெருந்திரளாக திரண்டு சென்று அஞ்சலி செலுத்தியது.

'I' - "BREAKS ALL RECORDS" Tamil Nadu opening weekend box-office collections

Shankar's latest  'I' opened on January 14th, a day ahead of Pongal, and witnessed jam-packed halls all over the state till Sunday, January 18th. The film had all the best screens in the state and was given record number of shows in all the leading multiplexes. In Chennai city, the 5-day opening weekend gross was estimated at around 3.84 crores by us at Behindwoods.

 

From across Tamil Nadu, from trusted trade sources, we hear that 'I' has grossed close to 40 crores after its first 5 days. This is among the best ever first weekend performances by a Tamil film in the state. The official press release is still awaited.

 

With rave reviews for Vikram's performance and a big curiosity surrounding the film, 'I' is expected to continue the momentum in the coming days and weeks too.

 

Police protection for Shankar’s house

I, directed by Shankar and produced by Aascar Films hit the screen on 14^th January and is much spoken for Vikram’s hard work, the beautiful visuals of P C Sreeram and AR Rahman’s music, among others.

Meanwhile, the transgender community in the city is said to be upset by the way they have been portrayed in the film and are reported to be filing a complaint against the film and its makers. It is also said that they are staging a 'dharna' in front of Shankar’s house and also in front of the Censor Office in Chennai.

Taking these into consideration, police protection has been given to Shankar’s house. More updates to follow ...

The suspense over the issue of revoking the ban on jallikattu continues, even as the Pongal festival is approaching.

As on date, there is no official word from the Central government on the issue. But, sources in the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests has told The Hindu that the Union Ministry is exploring the possibility of issuing a notification to remove bulls from the list of performing animals for exhibition and training.

Since July 2011, bulls form part of the list, which has been drawn up as per Section 22 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act.

In May last year, the Supreme Court imposed ban on jallikattu and other such events. On Monday, a group of senior officials of the Tamil Nadu government, led by S. Vijayakumar, Animal Husbandry, Dairy and Fisheries Secretary, met top officers of the MoEF in New Delhi with a request to have the deletion carried out.

MoEF sources said that since the Supreme Court had banned jallikattu, allowing it would invite contempt of court. So, on receiving representations from the State government, the Ministry was considering exempting bulls from this list so that it does not attract contempt of court. It will also ensure that no cruelty is perpetrated on the animals, the sources add.

However, the Animal Welfare Board of India, in a press release issued in Chennai on Tuesday, stated that “the ban on Jallikattu, bullock cart races, cock fights/animal fights is still in force and any violation of such a ban will amount to a serious contempt of court. The law enforcement agencies are requested to ensure that the judgment of the Supreme Court is implemented strictly and in compliance with the directions given by the Supreme Court.”

With demands galore in the state for holding the bull-taming sport of 'Jallikattu' coinciding with 'Pongal' harvest festival, Tamil Nadu government today assured steps for conducting the popular event, including asking Centre to remove bulls from a specific list of animals to facilitate the same. Chief Minister O Panneerselvam said steps have been taken to expedite hearing on a review petition filed by the state government against a Supreme Court order of banning 'Jallikattu.'
In a detailed statement, Panneerselvam recalled the legal battle between Jallikattu enthusiasts and animal welfare activists over holding the sport in the past, which was allowed by the High Court with restrictions, before Supreme Court completely banned it in May last year. The government had filed a review petition which is pending before the apex court and it will now file a petition seeking speedy disposal of the same, he said.
Incidentally, the Animal Welfare division of the Union Environment Ministry under the UPA government in 2011 had issued a notification banning the use of bulls as performing animals under Section 22 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, the Chief Minister said.
Panneerselvam said on January seven this year, the state government officials had met their Union Environment Ministry counterparts in Delhi and sought for removal of bulls from the aforesaid Act. The government had also sought changes to the 1960 Act in order to hold Jallikattu without any hurdles, he said.
"The state government officials will visit Delhi once again on January 12 to seek removing bulls from the list. I hope the Central government will issue a notification (in this regard) immediately. If so, it will help the state government issue a notification for holding Jallikattu," without affecting the Supreme Court verdict, he said.

Bengaluru: The Karnataka High Court on Monday lifted the ban on Kambala sport (Buffalo Race) in Dakshina Kannada District.

According to the HC, the Kambala sport needs to be held in the presence of Tehsildar and the police inspector of the jurisdiction.

The Karnataka HC also gave instructions to the authorities to prevent all kinds of cruelty meted out to the animals.

Earlier, the Kambala sport was banned in mid-November by the district administration of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada after the Animal Welfare Board of India (AWBI) pressed for it.
The HC had ordered the state government to express its point of view regarding the sport.

The Assistant Solicitor General representing the Central government stated that cruelty to buffaloes in Kambala sport was lesser when compared to the torture meted out to bulls in Jallikattu that was observed in Tamil Nadu.

Following these arguments, the HC had stated that the degree of cruelty to buffaloes was less in Kambala sport.

Kambala is a traditional sport in which pairs of buffaloes are made to run one after the other in paddy fields filled with slush.

The winning pair is showered with rewards. It's a form of entertainment for the rural people. The sport is held annually between the period of November-March.

The result, which surprised many onlookers, ends a decade of rule that critics said had become increasingly authoritarian and marred by nepotism and corruption. Analysts described the election as the most significant for decades in the island nation and a last chance for democracy. Many predicted widespread violence before, as well as after, polling. In the event, however, the transfer of power appeared to be proceeding smoothly. Rajapaksa, who had called early elections in November confident of a win, conceded defeat on Friday morning and vacated his official residence hours before the official announcement. Sirisena, 63, received 51.2% of the votes in Thursday’s election and Rajapaksa got 47.5%, said the elections commissioner, Mahinda Deshapriya. The veteran politician, who resigned from the government to lead the opposition, told his supporters that they shouldn’t “even hurt anybody’s feelings”. “The honour of this victory is in your peaceful conduct,” Sirisena said. The result ends the rule of the longest-serving leader in the region. Celebratory firecrackers could be heard exploding in Colombo, the cultural and commercial capital, after the president’s office said Rajapaksa had met the leader of the opposition to accept the victory of his challenger. Sirisena announced his candidacy hours after Rajapaksa, 69, called the election. The farmer-turned-politician united a fractured opposition and told voters he would root out corruption and undo unpopular constitutional reforms that have concentrated powers on the presidency. In successive campaign speeches he attacked the Rajapaksa clan for seeking to perpetuate dynastic rule. Three Rajapaksa brothers held senior posts and the president’s 28-year-old son was widely seen as being groomed as an heir. Observers said the unexpected challenge from the former health minister destabilised the incumbents. “It definitely threw them. They’ve not been on their game,” said Alan Keenan of the International Crisis Group. However, Sirisena, like Rajapaksa from the Sinhala majority, has not signalled any departure from the previous government’s hard line on reconciliation with the country’s Tamil minority. Though significantly calmer than elections in 2010, the campaign was nonetheless marred by more than 400 incidents of violence, according to monitors, and allegations of fraud and intimidation. Rajapaksa won handsomely in 2010, surfing a wave of popularity after overseeing a final bloody victory over ethnic Tamil separatists and ending a crippling 26-year civil war. He was seeking an unprecedented third term, having pushed through a constitutional amendment. “We should also not forget President Rajapaksa was beneficial to the country, especially during his first term,” said Nayanajith Thilakarathne, a vehicle-parts dealer in Colombo. The decision to seek early polls may have been more an acknowledgement of growing unpopularity than a statement of strength, however. The benefits of economic growth have failed to reach the poor, especially in rural areas. Corruption and apparent nepotism also led to anger. “Good governance is the most important issue now. The common man should feel that rule of law applies to everyone across the board without any discrimination,” said Fritz Fernandez, a lecturer in the capital. An adamant refusal to move on reconciliation with the Tamil minority and growing sectarian violence denied Rajapaksa votes among other constituencies. Votes from the ethnic Tamil-dominated former war zone in the north of the country and Muslim-dominated areas appear to have played a key role in Sirisena’s victory. According to one report, in the Tamil stronghold of Kilinochchi, Sirisena got nearly three-quarters of votes cast. Rajapaksa fell out with the west over allegations of war crimes involving the deaths of many thousands of Tamil civilians in the final phases of the civil war in 2009, and refused to cooperate with a UN-mandated investigation, becoming increasingly close to China. He was also blamed for successive crackdowns – including alleged murders – of opponents, human rights campaigners and other critics. The opposition has promised to address international concerns over war crimes and normalise relations with western nations as well as India. Narendra Modi, the Indian prime minister, said he had spoken to Sirisena to congratulate him. The first foreign dignitary to travel to Sri Lanka after the polls will be Pope Francis, who arrives next week for a three-day visit. The new president will have to lead a potentially fractious coalition of ethnic, religious, Marxist and centre-right parties, however and any prolonged political instability will open the way for a Rajapaksa comeback. He has also given no indication that he will differ significantly from his predecessor on issues such as post-war reconciliation or on his broadly rightwing economic policy. There are still fears of trouble ahead. “Our culture is such that there is always a chance of post-election violence,” said Paikiasothy Savaranamuttu, of the Colombo-based Centre for Policy Alternatives, before the vote.
